Daʿ Jamāla l-Wajhi Yaẓhar - Let the Beauty of the Face Appear
Chorus 1, sung twice#
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدْ
ṣalla llāhu ʿalā Muḥammad
Allah send blessings upon Muhammad
وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمْ
wa-ʿalā ālihi wa-sallam
and upon his family, and grant them peace

دَعْ جَمَالَ الوَجْهِ يَظْهَرْ
daʿ jamāla l-wajhi yaẓhar
Let the beauty of the face appear
لا تُغَطِّي يا حَبِيبِي
lā tughaṭṭī yā ḥabībī
don’t cover it, my beloved
طُولَ لَيْلِي فِيكَ أَسْهَرْ
ṭūla laylī fīka asʹhar
All night long I stay awake for you
زَادَ شَوْقِي وَنَحِيبِي
zāda shawqī wa-naḥībī
my longing and wailing have increased

هَكَذَا المَحْبُوبُ يَقْهَرْ
hākadhā l-maḥbūbu yaqhar
Thus the beloved breaks
بِالجَفَا قَلْبَ الكَئِيبِ
bi-l-jafā qalba l-kaʾībi
the heart of the sorrowful with abandonment
كُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِقْدُ جَوْهَرْ
kullu shayʾin ʿiqdu jawhar
Everything is a string of jewels
حِلْيَةُ الحُسْنِ المَهِيبِ
ḥilyatu l-ḥusni l-mahībi
an ornament of majestic beauty

كَانَ قَلْبِي عَنْهُ غَافِلْ
kāna qalbī ʿanhu ghāfil
My heart was heedless of Him
وَهْوَ لا يَغْفُلْ عَنِّي
wa-hwa lā yaghful ʿannī
while He never was heedless of me
فَانْثَنَى يَخْتَالُ رَافِلْ
fa-nthanā yakhtālu rāfil
Then He turned, strutting in majesty
بِثِيَابِ النَّفْسِ مِنِّي
bi-thiyābi n-nafsi minnī
clothed in garments from my very soul

يا مُسَمًّى بِالأَسَامِي
yā musamman bi-l-asāmī
O You who are named by all names
كُلُّهَا وَهْوَ المُنَزَّهْ
kulluhā wa-hwa l-munazzah
yet transcendent above them all
أَنْتَ فِي الكُلِّ مُرَامِي
anta fī l-kulli murāmī
You are my aim in all things
فِيكَ عَيْنِي تَتَنَزَّهْ
fīka ʿaynī tatanazzah
in You my eye finds delight

يا سُقَاةَ الرَّاحِ قُومُوا
yā suqāta r-rāḥi qūmū
O servers of wine, rise!
طَلَعَ الفَجْرُ عَلَيْنَا
ṭalaʿa l-fajru ʿalaynā
the dawn has risen upon us
عَنْ سِوَى الخَمْرَةِ صُومُوا
ʿan siwā l-khamrati ṣūmū
Fast from all but this wine
أَيْنَ مَنْ يَفْهَمُ أَيْنَا
ayna man yafhamu aynā
where is the one who understands where is he?

خَمْرُنَا خَمْرُ المَعَانِي
khamrunā khamru l-maʿānī
Our wine is the wine of meanings
عُتِّقَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِ آدَمْ
ʿuttiqat min qabli Ādam
aged before the time of Adam
وَلَهَا نَحْنُ القَنَانِي
wa-lahā naḥnu l-qanānī
And we are its flasks
مِنْ زَمَانٍ قَدْ تَقَادَمْ
min zamānin qad taqādam
from a time long past

لَمَعَتْ أَنْوَارُ سَلْمَى
lamaʿat anwāru Salmā
The lights of Salma sparkled
لَكَ مِنْ خَلْفِ السَّتَايِرْ
laka min khalfi s-satāyir
for you, from behind the curtains
لا يَكُنْ طَرْفُكَ أَعْمَى
lā yakun ṭarfuka aʿmā
Let not your eye be blind
عَنْ تَنَاوِيعِ الأَشَايِرْ
ʿan tanāwīʿi l-ashāyir
to the varied signs and symbols

إِنَّ أَمْرَ الحَقِّ أَظْهَرْ
inna amra l-ḥaqqi aẓhar
Indeed, the matter of Truth is clear
عِنْدَ غَيْرِ المُسْتَرِيبِ
ʿinda ghayri l-mustarībi
to the one free of doubt
كُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِقْدُ جَوْهَرْ
kullu shayʾin ʿiqdu jawhar
Everything is a string of pearls
حِلْيَةُ الحُسْنِ المَهِيبِ
ḥilyatu l-ḥusni l-mahībi
an ornament of majestic beauty

صَلِّ يَا رَبِّ وَسَلِّمْ
ṣalli yā rabbi wa-sallim
Send Your prayers and peace, O Lord
لِي عَلَى المُخْتَارِ طَهْ
lī ʿalā l-mukhtāri Ṭāhā
upon the Chosen One, Ṭāhā
مَنْ لَهُ كُنْتَ تُكَلِّمْ
man lahu kunta tukallim
The one to whom You spoke
لَيْلَةَ الإِسْرَا شِفَاهَا
laylata l-isrā shifāhā
on the night of the Ascension, directly
