Dāliyya fī Madḥ al-Nabī - A Dāliyya in Praise of the Prophet ﷺ

1#

Yā sayyidī, yā Rasūla-llāhi, yā sanadī
O my master, O Messenger of God, O my support,
yā wāsiʿa l-faḍli wa-l-iḥsāni wa-l-madadi
O you whose bounty, beneficence and succour are vast.

2#

Yā man huwa l-murtajā fī kulli nāzilatin
O you who are hoped for in every calamity,
wa-man huwa l-mawridu l-aḥlā li-kulli ṣadī
the sweetest spring for every thirsting soul.

3#

Yumnāka fawqa l-biḥāri z-zākhirāti nadan
Your right hand surpasses the brimming seas in generosity;
tuʿṭī l-jazīla bi-lā ḥaṣrin wa-lā ʿadadi
it gives abundantly, beyond limit or count.

4#

Kam shiddatin anta kāfīhā, wa-kam miḥanin
How many hardships you have warded off, and how many trials
ḥallat yamīnuka minhā sāʾira l-ʿuqadi
whose every knot your right hand has untied!

5#

Abwābu sāḥatika l-fayḥāʾi qad wasiʿat
The doors of your spacious court have embraced all mankind,
kulla l-anāmi, wa-mā ḍāqat ʿalā aḥadi
and never grown narrow for anyone.

6#

Waqaftu bi-l-bābi, yā mawlāya, lī amalun
I have stood at the door, O my master, with a hope;
fa-jbur bihi khāṭirī, wa-shdud bihi ʿaḍudī
through it mend my broken heart and strengthen my arm.

7#

Waqaftu bi-l-bābi arjū kashfa ḍāʾiqatī
I stood at the door hoping my distress would be lifted.
yā akrama l-khalqi, adriknī, wa-khudh bi-yadī
O most generous of creation, rescue me and take me by the hand.

8#

Fī l-qalbi wa-l-jismi ālāmun tuʿāwidunī
In heart and body are pains that keep returning to me;
idhā naẓarta ilayhā l-yawma lam taʿudi
if you look upon them today, they will return no more.

9#

Ṭālat ʿalayya, wa-qad ḍāqat masālikuhā
They have lingered long upon me, their ways out grown narrow,
wa-ḍāʿafat waqʿa mā alqāhu min kabadi
doubling the weight of the hardship I endure.

10#

Lā yastaṭīʿu lahā juhdī muqāwamatan
My strength cannot withstand them,
wa-lā afīʾu ilā ṣabrin wa-lā jaladi
and I find no refuge in patience or endurance.

11#

Mā lī akhāfu r-radā fī ẓilli sāḥatikum
Why should I fear ruin in the shade of your court,
wa-hya l-amānu wa-mahdu l-ʿīshati r-raghadi
when it is safety itself and the cradle of an ample life?

12#

A-fī jiwārika, yā Maʾmūnu, yalḥaqunī
In your neighbourhood, O Trustworthy One, shall injustice overtake me,
ḍaymun, wa-uṣbiḥu fī hammin wa-fī nakadi?!
and shall I wake in worry and misery?!

13#

A-ashtakī ḍ-ḍīqa wa-l-ḥirmāna fī baladin
Shall I complain of hardship and deprivation in a land
fīhā ghiyāthu l-barāyā minḥatu ṣ-Ṣamadi?!
where dwells the succour of all creatures, the gift of the Eternal Refuge?!

14#

Fīhā l-ḥabību lladhī turjā shafāʿatuhu
In it is the Beloved whose intercession is hoped for,
wa-yustajāru bihi fī aʿẓami sh-shidadi
in whom refuge is sought in the gravest hardships.

15#

Kullu l-maṭālibi wa-l-ḥājāti in fuqidat
Every aim and need, if it could not be found or granted elsewhere,
fa-innahā turtajā fī hādhihi l-baladi
may be hoped for in this city.

16#

Min ayna lī mawridun asqī bihi ẓamaʾī
Where else would I find a spring to quench my thirst,
in kuntu fī baḥrika l-mawrūdi lam aridi?!
if I did not come to drink from your much-visited sea?!

17#

Wa-ayna aḥẓā bi-ʿaṭfin shāmilin wa-riḍan
And where would I be granted all-embracing kindness and good pleasure,
in kuntu ʿindaka hādhā l-ʿaṭfa lam ajidi?!
if I did not find this kindness with you?!

18#

Wa-man yuqawwimu lī mā fiyya min ʿiwajin
And who would straighten the crookedness within me,
in kunta lam tabghi taqwīmī wa-lam turidi?!
if you did not seek to set me right, nor did you want it?!

19#

Wāfaytu muʿtaqidan anna l-masīra ilā
I have come believing that the journey to your abode
maghnāka fīhi ḥayātu r-rūḥi wa-l-jasadi
holds life for soul and body alike.

20#

Fa-nẓur ilayya bi-ʿayni l-ʿaṭfi, wa-rʿa ḥashan
So look upon me with the eye of kindness, and care for a heart
bāqin ʿalā l-ʿahdi, lam yankuth wa-lam yaḥidi
that stays true to its covenant; it has neither broken it nor swerved.

21#

Wa-rʿa ṣaḥbī wa-aḥbābī wa-man ṭamiʿū
And care for my companions and loved ones,
fī nayli ʿaṭfika min ahlī wa-min waladī
and those of my family and children who long for your kindness.

22#

Wa-nẓur li-jayshika jayshi l-muslimīna taʿud
And look upon your army, the army of the Muslims,
ilayhi haybatuhu fī sālifi l-amadi
so its awe may return to it as in ages past.

23#

Wa-hzim juyūsha l-ʿidā mahmā yakun lahumu
And rout the armies of the foe,
min shiddati l-baʾsi aw min kathrati l-ʿadadi
however great their might or however many their numbers.

24#

Dāmat ʿalayka ṣalātu-llāhi ʿāṭiratan
May God’s fragrant blessings rest upon you always,
wa-dāma dhikruka marfūʿan ilā l-abadi
and may your mention stay exalted forever.

Notes on the text#

From the editor’s notes in the source PDF:

  • Verse 16: arid (أَرِدِ) is from wurūd, coming to water, not from irāda.
  • Verse 18: turid (تُرِدِ) is from irāda.
  • Verse 20: yaḥid (يَحِدِ) is from ḥāda yaḥīdu, to swerve. Printed copies reading yajid are mistaken and change the meaning.
