Ilzam Bāb Rabbik - Hold Fast to the Door of Your Lord

Chorus 1#

lā yakthuru hammuk mā quddir yakūn
Let not your worries overwhelm you; whatever was ordained will come to pass

1#

ilzam bāb rabbik wa-truk kulla dūn
Cling to the door of your Lord, leave everything else aside
wa-sʾalhu s-salāmah min dāri l-futūn
Ask Him for safety from the abode of tribulations
lā yaḍīqu ṣadruk fa-l-ḥādith yahūn
Let not your heart be restricted, every temporal thing will soon fade
allāhu l-muqaddir wa-l-ʿālam shuʾūn
Allah is the Ordainer, and this world is His affair

2#

fikrak wa-khtiyārak daʿhumā warāk
Your thoughts and preferences, leave them behind
wa-t-tadbīr ayḍan wa-shhad man barāk
Together with your plans. And witness the One who created you alone
mawlāka l-muhaymin innahū yarāk
Your Patron Lord, the Guardian, indeed He sees you
fawwiḍ luh umūrak wa-ḥsin fi ẓ-ẓunūn
Entrust all your affairs to Him, and then maintain the best of opinions

3#

law wa-lim wa-kayfa qawlu dhi l-ḥamaq
If? Why? How? Is the speech of fools
yaʿtariḍ ʿala llāhi lladhī khalaq
Opposing Allah, the One who created [everything]
wa-qaḍā wa-qaddar kulla shay bi-ḥaqq
And [the One who] preordained and decreed everything in truth
yā qalbī tanabbah wa-truki l-mujūn
O my heart take heed, and abandon your impertinence

4#

qad ḍamin taʿālā bi-r-rizqi l-qawām
The Exalted has guaranteed all necessary provisions
fi l-kitābi l-munzal nūran li-l-anām
In the Revealed Book, a light for all creation
fa-r-riḍā farīḍah wa-s-sakhaṭ ḥarām
So contentment [with the decree] is obligatory, and discontent forbidden
wa-l-qunūʿ rāḥah wa-ṭ-ṭamaʿ junūn
Frugality in everything is comfort, while covetousness is insanity

5#

anta wa-l-khalāʾiq kulluhum ʿabīd
You and the whole of creation are all mere servants [of Allah]
wa-l-ilāhu fīnā yafʿal mā yurīd
And the Lord does to us whatever He wills
hammuk wa-ghtimāmuk wayḥak mā yufīd
Your worries and sorrows – woe to you – bring you no benefit
al-qaḍā taqaddam fa-ghnami s-sukūn
The decree has already foregone, so seize this tranquility

6#

alladhī li-ghayrik lā yaṣil ilayk
That which is meant for others will never come to you
wa-lladhī qusim lak ḥāṣilun ladayk
And that which has been apportioned for you will soon be attained
fa-shtaghil bi-rabbik wa-lladhī ʿalayk
So occupy yourself solely with your Lord and what is required of you
fī farḍi l-ḥaqīqah wa-sh-sharʿi l-maṣūn
With regards to the obligatory realities and the protected Sacred Law

7#

sharʿi l-muṣṭafā al-hādi l-bashīr
The Law of the Chosen One, the Guide, the Bringer of Glad Tidings
khatmi l-anbiyāʾi l-badri l-munīr
The Seal of Prophets, the Illumined Full Moon
ṣalla llāhu ʿalayhi r-rabbu l-qadīr
The Blessings of Allah, the All-Powerful Lord, be upon him
mā rīḥu ṣ-ṣabā mālat bi-l-ghuṣūn
So long as the morning breeze sways branches
