Mahbubi bil Wisal An’Am Alayya - My Beloved has Blessed Me with Union

Chorus 1#

مَحْبُوبِي بِالوِصَالْ أَنْعَمْ عَلَيَّ
maḥbūbī bi-l-wiṣāl anʿam ʿalayya
My beloved has blessed me with union
وَجَادَ بِالنَّوَالْ مِنْهُ إِلَيَّ
wa-jāda bi-n-nawāl minhu ilayya
and generously granted me favor from Him

لِجِيرَانٍ لَنَا بِالْأَبْطَيحَه
li-jīrānin lanā bi-l-abṭīḥa
To our neighbours in al-Abtayha
بَعَثْتُ مَعَ النُّسَيِمَاتِ التَّحِيَّه
baʿthtu maʿa n-nusayimāti t-taḥiyya
I sent a greeting with the breeze

وَأَوْدَعْتُ النَّسِيمَ حَدِيثَ حُبٍّ
wa-awdaʿtu n-nasīma ḥadītha ḥubb
And I bade the breeze farewell with a word of love
قَدِيمٍ كَانَ مِنْ يَومِ القَضِيَّه
qadīmin kāna min yawmi l-qadīya
As old as the Day of Decree.

دَفِينٍ فِي الْفُؤَادِ بِهِ حَيَاتِي
dafīnin fī l-fuʾādi bihi ḥayātī
Buried in the heart, and whereby I live
إِذَا صَالَ الفَنَاءُ عَلَى السَوِيَّه
idhā ṣāla l-fanāʾu ʿalā s-sawīya
When annihilation leaps upon us equally

تُزَمْزِمٌ الْحَدَاةُ بِذِكْرِ لَيْلَى
tuzamzimun l-ḥadātu bi-dhikri laylā
The cameleers murmur in memory of Layla
وَمَا هِيَ يَا فَتَى بِالْعَامِرِيَّه
wamā hiya yā fatā bi-l-ʿāmiriyya
So long as she is in al-’Amiriyya, o boy.

5#

فَأَصْبُوا ثُمَّ أَصْبُوا ثُمَّ أَصْبُو
fa-aṣbū thumma aṣbū thumma aṣbu
So I am young, then I strive, then desire
وَلَا كَالصَّبَوَاتِ الْعُذُرِيَّه
walā kaṣ-ṣabawāti l-ʿuḏuriyya
And youthful inclinations are not platonic.

6#

وَلَيْسَتْ لِلْغَوَانِي وَالْأَغَانِي
walay-sat li-l-ghawānī wa-l-aġānī
And they were not for fair maids or melodies,
وَلَا لِلشَّهَوَاتِ الدُّنْيَوِيَّهِ
walā li-sh-shahawāti d-dunyawīya
Nor for worldly lusts and license.

7#

وَلَا لِلغَانِيَاتِ بِأَيِّ مَعْنَى
walā li-l-ġāniyāti bi-ayyi maʿnā
Nor for song-girls of any sort,
وَلَكِن لِلْأُمُورِ الْعُلُويَّه
walakin li-l-umūri l-ʿulūwiyya
But for the higher matters!

8#

حَقَائِقُ بَلْ رَقَائِقُ قَد تَسَامَت
ḥaqāʾiqu bal raqāʾiqu qad tasāmat
Truths, nay subtleties of such lofty state,
بِأَوْجِ الحَضَرَاتِ الْقُدُسِيَّه
bi-awji l-ḥaḍarāti l-qudsiyya
At the pinnacle of the sacred presences.

9#

مَنَاظِرُ لِلنَّوَاظِرِ مِنْ قُلُوبِ
manāẓiru li-n-nawāẓiri min qulūbi
Spectacles to those beholding from hearts
مُطَهَّرَةٍ زَكِيَّاتٍ نَقِيَّه
muṭahharatin zakīyatin naqiyya
Purified, sincere, and cleansed.

10#

وَأَرْوَاحٌ تَطِيرُ إِلَى عُلَاهَا
wa-arwāḥun taṭīru ilā ʿulāhā
And souls which fly to their highest reaches
بِأَجْنِحَةِ الْغَرَامِ الْمَقْعَدِيَّه
bi-ajniḥati l-ġarāmi l-maqʿadiyya
Upon fledgling wings of infatuation.

11#

فَتَسْرَعُ فِي رِيَاضٍ مِنْ جِنَانٍ
fatasarʿu fī riāḍin min jinānin
So you speed into the Meadows of the Gardens
وَتَأْوِي لِلْقَنَادِيلِ الْمُضِيَّه
wataʾwī li-l-qa-nādīli l-muḍiyya
and seek refuge among the Everlasting Candles.

12#

فَوَاشَوْقَ الْفُؤَادِ لِخَيْرِ عَيْشٍ
fawāšawqa l-fuʾādi li-khayri ʿayšin
O what longing has the heart for the best of life
مَعَ الْأَحْبَابِ فِي الْغُرْفِ الْعَلِيَّة
Mʿal al-aḥbābi fī l-ġurfi l-ʿaliyya
With the beloveds in the lofty chambers.

13#

عَسَى الرَّبُّ الْكَرِيمُ بِمَحْضِ فَضْلٍ
ʿasā r-rabbu l-karīmu bimakḍi faḍlin
May the Noble Lord by His Pure Favour
يُبَلِّغُهَا أَقَاصِي الْأُمُنِيَّه
yuballighuhā aqāṣī l-umuniyya
Transport them to the furthest reaches of their wishes!
