Qul li-lladhī Lāmanī - Say to the One Who Blamed Me
Chorus 1#
lā ilāha illā Llāhu
There is no god but Allah
lā ilāha illā Llāhu
There is no god but Allah
lā ilāha illā Llāhu
There is no god but Allah
Muḥammadun rasūlu Llāhi
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah
1#
qul li-lladhī lāmanī
Say to the one who blamed me
fīhā wa-ʿannafanī
for this love and reproached me,
ḥaythu lam yaʿrif shaʾnī
He knew not my state
li-dhāka huwa l-maʿdhūru
and thus he is excused.
2#
law ʿarafa ʿudhdhālī
If my critics had known
ḥaqīqata l-wiṣāli
the truth of this union,
la-ṣārū mithla ḥālī
They would have become as I am
wa-lākin jarā l-maqdūru
but fate has decreed its course.

jalasnā ʿalā ḥaḍratin
We sat in the Presence
maʿa mulūki l-khamrati
among the kings of wine,
min ʿajāʾibi l-qudrati
A marvel of divine power
kaʾsuhā ʿanhā yadūru
its cup passes from her hand.

hādhī Laylā qad badat
Here is Layla, revealed
bi-l-ḥusni talawwanat
adorned in beauty’s hues,
li-baʿḍihā ẓaharat
Half unveiled to the sight
wa-baṭanat fī ẓ-ẓuhūri
and half concealed within the appearing.

saqatnī kaʾsa t-taḥqīqi
She gave me the cup of realization
wa-hadatnī li-ṭ-ṭarīqi
and guided me to the Path,
aghraqatnī fī l-ʿamīqi
She drowned me in the deep
baḥruhā fāqa l-buḥūra
her ocean surpasses all seas.
6#
fa-wa-Llāhi man danā
By God! Whoever draws near
wa-dhāqa sirra l-fanā
and tastes the secret of annihilation,
la-bāḥa bi-mā buḥnā
Will utter what we have uttered
qahran wa-huwa l-maʿdhūru
by compulsion — and he is excused.
