ṬalaʿA l-Badru ʿAlaynā - The (full) White Moon Rose Over Us

Chorus

طَلَعَ الْبَدْرُ عَلَيْنَا

ṭalaʿa l-badru ʿalaynā

The (full) white moon rose over us,

مِنْ ثَنِيَّاتِ الْوَدَاعْ

min thaniyyāti l-wadāʿ

from the Valley of Wada

وَجَبَ الشُّكْرُ عَلَيْنَا

wajaba sh-shukru ʿalaynā

And we owe it to show gratefullness,

مَا دَعَا لِلّٰهِ دَاعْ

mā daʿā lillāhi dāʿ

where call is to Allah

أَيُّهَا الْمَبْعُوثُ فِينَا

ayyuha l-mabʿūthu fīnā

Oh you who were raised amongst us,

جِئْتَ بِالْأَمْرِ الْمُطَاعْ

jiʾta bil-amri l-muṭāʿ

coming with a work to be obeyed

جِئْتَ شَرَّفْتَ الْمَدِينَةْ

jiʾta sharraf-ta l-madīnah

You have brought to this city nobleness

مَرْحَباً يَا خَيْرَ دَاعْ

marḥaban yā khayra dāʿ

Welcome! Best call to God’s way

The Valley of Wada here is referring to the place where people would walk with their loved ones who were travelling and say goodbye.
