The Shimmering Light
Chapter 1
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
يَا ربِّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمْ
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalayhi wa-sallim
O Lord, send blessings upon him and grant him peace
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
حَبِيبِكَ الشَّافِعِ الْمُشَفَّعْ
ḥabībuka ash-shāfiʿ al-mushaffiʿ
Your Beloved, the Accepted Intercessor
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
أَعْلَى الْوَرَى رُتْبَةً وَأَرْفَعْ
aʿlá al-wará rutbatan wa-arfaʿ
the loftiest and most exalted of creation in station
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
أَسْمَى الْبَرَايَا جَاهًا وَأَوسَعْ
asmá al-baráyá jāhan wa-awsaʿ
the highest and greatest of humankind in rank
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
وَاسْلُكْ بِنَا رَبِّ خَيْرَ مَهْيَعْ
wa-sluk binā rabbi khayra mahyaʿ
and set us on the best path, O Lord
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
وَعَافِنَا وَاشْفِ كُلَّ مُوجَعْ
wa-ʿāfinā wa-ishfi kulla mujʿ
and grant us well-being and heal all who are pained
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
وَأَصْلِحِ الْقَلْبَ وَاعْفُ وَانْفَعْ
wa-aṣliḥi al-qalba wa-ʿfū wa-nfaʿ
and mend our hearts, pardon us, and benefit us
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
وَاكْفِ الْمُعَادِي وَاصْرِفْهُ وَارْدَعْ
wa-kfi al-muʿādī wa-ṣrifhu wa-ardaʿ
and restrain our Foe; avert and deter him
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
نَحُلُّ فِي حِصْنِكَ الْمُمَنَّعْ
naḥullu fī ḥiṣnika al-mumanʿ
Lodge us in Your impregnable fortress
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
رَبِّ ارْضَ عَنَّا رِضَاكَ الْأَرْفَعْ
rabbi irḍá ʿannā riḍāka al-arfaʿ
Lord, be supremely pleased with us
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا فِي الْجِنَانِ مَجْمَعْ
wa-jʿal lanā fī al-jināni majmaʿ
and let us attend his gatherings in the Gardens
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
رَافِقْ بِنَا خَيْرَ خَلْقِكَ اجْمَعْ
rāfiq binā khayra khalqika ijmaʿ
Grant us the companionship of the Best of Your Creation in entirety
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalá muḥammad
O Lord, send blessings upon Muhammad
يَا ربِّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمْ
yā rabbi ṣalli ʿalayhi wa-sallim
O Lord, send blessings upon him and grant him peace
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 2
أَعُوذُ باِللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
aʿūdhu bi-llāhi mina ash-shayṭāni r-rajīm
I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed satan
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Ever-Merciful
﴿ إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا لِّيَغْفِرَ لَكَ ٱللَّهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِن ذَنۢبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ وَيُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكَ وَيَهْدِيَكَ صِرَٰطًا مُّسْتَقِيمًا وَيَنصُرَكَ ٱللَّهُ نَصْرًا عَزِيزًا ﴾
﴿ innā fataḥnā laka fatḥan mubīnan li-yaghfira laka llāhu mā taqaddama min dhanbika wa-mā taʾakhkhara wa-yutimmu ni‘matahu ʿalayka wa-yahdīka ṣirāṭan mustaqīman wa-yansuraka llāhu naṣran ʿazīzan ﴾
[48:1] Truly We have granted you a manifest victory. [48:2] [O Beloved] so that Allah may forgive, for your sake, your community's past faults and those to follow, complete His favor to you, guide [your community] to a straight path. [48:3] and help you mightily.
﴿ لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ فإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَقُلْ حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ﴾
﴿ laqad jāʾakum rasūlun min anfusikum ʿazīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bi-l-muʾminīna raʾūfun raḥīm fa-in tawallaw fa-qul ḥasbiyallāhu lā ilāha illā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-huwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm ﴾
[9:128] A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering distresses him: he is deeply concerned for you and full of kindness and mercy towards the believers. [9:129] If they turn away [O Beloved], say, ‘Allah is enough for me: there is no god but Him; I put my trust in Him; He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.'
﴿ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا ﴾
﴿ innā llāhu wa-malāʾikatuhu yuṣallūna ʿalā n-nabiyy yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ṣallū ʿalayhi wa-sallimū taslīman ﴾
[33:56] Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and salute him with abundant greetings of peace.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 3
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَانَا
al-ḥamdu li-llāhi alladhī hadānā
All praise be to Allah who guided us
بِعَبْدِهِ الْمُخْتَارِ مَنْ دَعَانَا
bi-ʿabdihi al-mukhtār man daʿānā
through His chosen servant
إِلَيْهِ بِٱلْإِذْنِ وَقَدْ نَادَانَا
ilayhi bi-l-idhn wa-qad nādānā
who called us unto Him by His permission.
لَبَّيْكَ يَا مَنْ دَلَّنَا وَحَدَانَا
labbayka yā man dallanā wa-hadānā
Here we are! At your service, O you who guided and urged us on!
صَلَّى عَلَيْكَ اللَّهُ بَارِئُكَ الَّذِي
ṣallá ʿalayka llāhu bāriʿuka alladhī
May Allah, Your Maker, who distinguished and gifted us with you,
بِكَ يَا مُشَفَّعُ خَصَّنَا وَحَبَانَا
bika yā mushaffiʿ khaṣṣanā wa-ḥabānā
send blessings upon you, O Accepted Intercessor
مَعَ آلِكَ الأَطْهَارِ مَعْدِنِ سِرِّكَ الْــ
maʿa ālika al-aṭhār maʿdin sirrika al-
and upon your pure family, the treasure-trove of your sublime secret,
أَسْمَى فَهُمْ سُفُنُ النَّجَاةِ حِمَانَا
asmá fahum sufun an-najāti ḥimānā
for they are the ships of salvation; our protection
وَعَلَى صَحَابَتِكَ الْكِرَامِ حُمَاةِ دِيــ
wa-ʿalá ṣaḥābatika al-kiram ḥumāāti di-
and upon your noble companions, the protectors of
ــنِكَ أَصْبَحُوا لِوَلَائِهِ عُنْوَانَا
nika aṣbaḥū li-wilāʾihi ʿunwānā
your religion. --They are the epitome of fidelity to him.
وَالتَّابِعِيْنَ لَهُمْ بِصِدْقٍ مَا حَدَا
wa-t-tābiʿīna lahum bi-ṣidqin mā ḥadā
And upon those who truly follow them, for as long as
حَادِي الْمَوَدَّةِ هَيَّجَ الْأَشْجَانَا
ḥādi al-mawadda hayyaja al-ashjānā
the melodies of the leader of the caravan of love urge the caravan onward.
وَاللَّهِ مَا ذُكِرَ الْحَبِيبُ لَدَى الْمُحِبّ
wa-llāhi mā dhukira l-ḥabību ladá l-muḥibb
I swear by Allah, never is the beloved mentioned to a lover
إِلَّا وَأَضْحَى وَالِهًا نَشْوَانَا
illā wa-aḍḥá wa-iláhan nashwānā
except that the lover becomes enraptured and intoxicated.
أَيْنَ الْمُحِبُّونَ الَّذِينَ عَلَيْهِمُ
ayna al-muḥibbūna alladhīna ʿalayhim
Where are the lovers who find it paltry to expend
بَذْلُ النُّفُوسِ مَعَ النَّفَائِسِ هَانَا
badhlun-nufūsi maʿa n-nufāisi hānā
their souls and all that is precious for the beloved?
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ بِذِكْرِ طَهَ الْمُصْطَفَى
lā yasmaʿūna bi-dhikri Ṭaha l-muṣṭafá
Never do they hear mention of Taha, the Chosen One,
إِلَّا بِهِ انْتَعَشُوا وَأَذْهَبَ رَانَا
illā bihi intʿashū wa-adhhabā ranānā
except that they are invigorated and the rust on their hearts is removed.
فَاهْتَاجَتِ الْأَرْوَاحُ تَشْتَاقُ اللِّقَا
fa-htājati l-arwāḥu tashtāqu l-liqā
Their souls become excited. They yearn and pine for a meeting with their beloved,
وَتَحِنُّ تَسْأَلُ رَبَّهَا الرِّضْوَانَا
wa-taḥinnu tasʾalu rabbahā r-riḍwānā
and implore their Lord for His good-pleasure.
حَالُ الْمُحِبِّينَ كَذَا فَاسْمَعْ إِلَى
ḥālu l-muḥibbīna ka-dhā fa-asmaʿ ilá
Such is the state of lovers. So listen to the biography
سِيَرِ الْمُشَفَّعِ وَارْهِفِ الْآذَانَا
siyari l-mushaffiʿ wa-arhif al-ādhānā
of the Accepted Intercessor, and listen well!
وَانْصِتْ إِلَى أَوْصَافِ طَهَ الْمُجْتَبَى
wa-nṣit ilá awṣāfi Ṭaha l-mujtabā
Listen to the traits of Taha, the Chosen One.
وَاحْضِرْ لِقَلْبِكَ يَمْتَلِئْ وِجْدَانَا
wa-aḥḍir li-qalbika yamtaliʾ wijdānā
Make your heart present. It will brim with ecstasy.
يَا رَبَّنَا صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمًا
yā rabbanā ṣalli wa-sallim dāʾiman
O our Lord, send blessings and grant peace constantly
عَلَى حَبِيبِكَ مَنْ إِلَيْكَ دَعَانَا
ʿalá ḥabībika man ilayka daʿānā
to Your Beloved who called us unto You
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 4
نَبَّأَنَا اللَّهُ فَقَالَ 'جَآءَكُمْ
nabbaʾanā llāhu faqāla ‘jāʾakum
Allah told us: A light has come to you.
نُورٌ' فَسُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَنْبَانَا
nūrٌ' fa-subḥāna alladhī anbanā
Glory be to the One who told us!
وَالنُّورُ طَهَ عَبْدُهُ مَنَّ بِهِ
wa-n-nūru Ṭaha ʿabduhu manna bihi
The light is Taha, His servant, whom He conferred on us
فِي ذِكْرِهِ أَعْظِمْ بِهِ مَنَّانَا
fī dhikrihi aʿẓim bihi mannānā
as He told us in the Quran. How great a Giver!
هُوَ رَحْمَةُ الْمَوْلَى تَأَمَّلْ قَوْلَهُ
huwa raḥmatu l-mawlá ta-ammal qawlahu
[The Prophet] is the mercy of our Lord. Reflect on His saying:
فَلْيَفْرَحُوا۟. وَاغْدُ بِهِ فَرْحَانَا
fal-yafarḥū wa-ghdu bi-hi farḥānā
{In Allah's grace and mercy let them rejoice}. So rejoice in him
مُسْتَمْسِكًا بِٱلْعُرْوَةِ ٱلْوُثْقَىٰ وَمُعْــ
mustam'sikan bil-ʿurwati l-wuthqá wa-muʿ(taṣimًan)
while grasping the Firmest Handhold
ــتَصِمًا بِحَبْلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ أَنْشَانَا
(muʿ)taṣimًan bi-ḥabli l-lāhi man anshānā
and holding fast to the Rope of Allah who created us
وَاسْتَشْعِرَنْ أَنْوَارَ مَنْ قِيلَ مَتَى
wa-istashʿir'an anwāra man qīla matá
Feel the lights of the one who was asked,
كُنْتَ نَبِيًّا قَالَ آدَمُ كَانَا
kunta nabiyyan qāla Ādamu kānā
“When were you a Prophet?”
بَيْنَ التُّرَابِ وَبَيْنَ مَاءٍ فَاسْتَفِقْ
bayna ṭ-turābi wa-bayna mā'in fa-istafiq
He replied: “When Adam was between water and clay.”
مِنْ غَفْلَةٍ عَنْ ذَا وَكُنْ يَقْظَانَا
min ghaflatin ʿan dhā wa-kun yaqẓānā
Waken from heedlessness of this.
وَاعْبُرْ إِلَى أَسْرَارِ رَبِّي لَمْ يَزَلْ
wa-ibʿur ilá asrāri rabbī lam yazal
Meditate on the secrets of: My Lord always
يَنْقُلُنِي بَيْنَ الْخِيَارِ مُصَانَا
yanqulnī bayna l-khiyāri muṣānā
placed me in the choicest chaste lineage.
لَمْ تَفْتَرِقْ مِنْ شُعْبَتَيْنِ إِلَّا أَنَا
lam taftariq min shuʿbatayni illá anā
Never did a lineage branch in two, except that I
فِي خَيْرِهَا حَتَّى بُرُوزِيَ آنَا
fī khayrihā ḥattá burūziyā ānā
was in the better line, until the time arrived for my appearance.
فَأَنَا خِيَارٌ مِنْ خِيَارٍ قَدْ خَرَجْتُ
fa-anā khiyārٌ min khiyārin qad kharajtu
So I am the Choicest of the Choicest. I have come
مِنْ نِكَاحٍ لِي إِلَهِيَ صَانَا
min nikāḥin lī ilāhiyā ṣānā
through a chaste lineage of marriage that my Lord safeguarded.
طَهَّرَهُ اللَّهُ حَمَاهُ اخْتَارَهُ
ṭahharahu llāhu ḥamāhu ikhtārahu
Allah made him pure, protected him, and chose him,
وَمَا بَرَى كَمِثْلِهِ إِنْسَانَا
wa-mā barā kamithlihī insānā
and never has a person been created like him.
وَبِحُبِّهِ وَبِذِكْرِهِ وَالنَّصْرِ وَالتَّــ
wa-bi-ḥubbihi wa-bi-dhikrihi wa-n-naṣri wa-t
And to love him, remember him, support him, and revere him
ــوْقِيرِ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ قَدْ أَوْصَانَا
awqīri rabbul-ʿarshi qad awṣānā
is a commandment to us from the Lord of the Throne.
يَا رَبَّنَا صلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمًا
yā rabbanā ṣalli wa-sallim dāʾiman
O our Lord, send blessings and grant peace constantly
عَلَى حَبِيبِكَ مَنْ إِلَيْكَ دَعَانَا
ʿalá ḥabībika man ilayka daʿānā
to Your Beloved who called us unto You
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 5
هَذَا وَقَدْ نَشَرَ الإِلَهُ نُعُوتَهُ
hādhā wa-qad nashara l-īlaha nuʿūtahu
God announced his attributes in the Holy Books.
فِي الْكُتبِ بَيَّنَهَا لَنَا تِبْيَانَا
fī l-kutub bayyanahā lanā tibyānā
He explained them clearly to humanity.
أَخَذَ مِيثَاقَ النَّبِيِّينَ لَمَا
akhadha mīthāqa n-nabiyyīna lamā
He took a pledge from the Prophets:
آتَيْتُكُمْ مِنْ حِكْمَةٍ إِحْسَانَا
ātaytukum min ḥikmatin iḥsanā
If, after I bestow out of generosity Scripture and wisdom upon you,
وَجَاءَكُمْ رَسُولُنَا لَتُؤْمِنُنَّ
wa-jāʾakum rasūlunā l-tu'minunna
My Messenger comes to you, you must believe in him,
وَتَنْصُرُونَ وَتُصْبِحُونَ اعْوَانَا
wa-tanṣurūna wa-tuṣbiḥūna aʿwānā
support him, and be his helpers.
قَدْ بَشَّرُوا أَقْوَامَهُمْ بِالْمُصْطَفَى
qad bashsharū aqwāmahum bi-l-muṣṭafá
The Prophets gave their people the good news of the Chosen One.
أَعظِمْ بِذَلِكَ رُتْبَةً وَمَكَانَا
aʿẓim bidhālika rutbatan wa-makānā
How great is that as a station and status!
فَهُوَ وَإِنْ جَاءَ الْأَخِيرُ مُقَدَّمٌ
fahuwa wa-in jā'a l-akhīru muqaddam
Though he was the last to come, he takes precedence over all.
يَمْشُونَ تَحْتَ لِوَاءِ مَنْ نَادَانَا
yamshūna taḥta liwā'i man nādānā
All of the Prophets will walk under his banner.
يَا أُمَّةَ الْإِسْلَامِ أَوَّلُ شَافِعٍ
yā ummata l-islāmi awwalu shāfiʿin
He proclaimed to us: O community of Islam, the first intercessor
وَمُشْفَّعٍ أَنَا قَطُّ لَا أَتَوَانَى
wa-mushaffiʿin anā qaṭṭٌ lā atawānā
and the first whose intercession is accepted is I, and I will not relax
حَتَّى أُنَادَى ارْفَعْ وَسَلْ تُعْطَ وَقُلْ
ḥattá unādā irfaʿ wa-salli tuʿṭa wa-qul
until I am told: Arise! Ask; you will be given.
يُسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِكَ نَجْمُ فَخْرِكَ بَانَا
yusmaʿu li-qawlika najmٌ fakhrika bānā
Speak; you will be heard. The star of your glory is apparent.
وَلِوَاءُ حَمْدِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ بِيَدِي
wa-liwā'u ḥamdi llāhi jalla biyadī
The Banner of the Majestic Lord's Praise will be in my hand
وَلَأَوَّلًا آتِي أَنَا الْجِنَانَا
wa-la-awwalan atī anā l-jināna
and the first to enter the Gardens is I.
وَأَكْرَمُ الْخَلْقِ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنَا
wa-akramu l-khalqi ʿalá llāhi anā
And the noblest of creation to Allah is I.
فَلَقَدْ حَبَاكَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ حَنَانَا
falaqad ḥabāk allāhu minhu ḥanānā
Truly, Allah has shown you the tenderest of love.
وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ فَتَرْضَى جَلَّ مِنْ
wa-lasawfa yuʿṭīka fatarḍá jalla min
And He is sure to give you so much that you will be well satisfied.
مُعْطٍ تَقَاصَرَ عَنْ عَطَاهُ نُهَانَا
muʿṭin taqāṣara ʿan ʿaṭāhu nuhanā
How majestic a Giver! Our minds cannot fathom His gifts.
بِاللَّهِ كَرِّرْ ذِكْرَ وَصْفِ مُحَمَّدٍ
bi-llāhi karrir dhikra waṣf muḥammadin
I implore you for the sake of Allah to repeatedly mention the description of Muhammad
كَيْمَا تُزِيحَ عَنِ الْقُلُوبِ الرَّانَا
kayfa tuziyḥi ʿanil-qulūbi r-ranānā
so that you remove the rust on the hearts.
يَا رَبَّنَا صلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمًا
yā rabbanā ṣalli wa-sallim dāʾiman
O our Lord, send blessings and grant peace constantly
عَلَى حَبِيبِكَ مَنْ إِلَيْكَ دَعَانَا
ʿalá ḥabībika man ilayka daʿānā
to Your Beloved who called us unto You
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 6
لَمَّا دَنَا وَقْتُ الْبُرُوزِ لِأَحْمَدٍ
lammā daná waqtu l-burūzi li-Aḥmadin
When the time drew near for the appearance of Ahmad
عَنْ إِذْنِ مَنْ مَا شَاءَهُ قَدْ كَانَا
ʿan idhni man māsha'ahu qad kānā
by the authority of the One who whatever He wills comes into being,
حَمَلَتْ بِهِ الْأُمُّ الْأَمِينَةُ بِنْتُ وَهْــ
ḥamalathu al-ummu l-amīna bintu wāh
[Ahmad's] trustworthy mother, Wahb's daughter,
ــبٍ مَنْ لَهَا أَعْلَى الإِلَهُ مَكَانَا
bin man lahā aʿlá llāhu makānā
whose status God raised, conceived him
مِنْ وَالِدِ الْمُخْتَارِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِنْ
min wālidi l-mukhtār ʿabdu llāhi bin
from the Chosen One's father, Abdullah,
عَبْدٍ لِمُطَّلِبٍ رَأَى الْبُرْهَانَا
abdin limuṭṭalibi ra'á l-burhānā
son of Abdul Muttalib, who saw clear signs.
قَدْ كَانَ يَغْمُرُ نُورُ طَهَ وَجْهَهُ
qad kāna yaghmuru nūru Ṭaha wajhahu
The light of Taha covered [Abdul Muttalib's] face
وَسَرَى إِلَى الْإِبْنِ الْمَصُونِ عَيَانَا
wa-sarā ilá l-ibni l-maṣūni ʿayānā
and then transferred to his chaste son and was visible on his face for all to see.
وَهُوَ ابْنُ هَاشِمٍ الْكَرِيمِ الشَّهْمِ بِنْ
wa-huwa ibnu Hāshimil-karīm ish-shahmin bin
[Abdul Muttalib] is the son of the noble and gallant Hashim,
عَبْدِ مَنَافِ بِنْ قُصَيٍّ كَانَا
'abdi 'Manāfin bin Quṣayyin kānā
son of Abdi Manaf, son of Qusay,
وَالِدُهُ يُدْعَى حَكِيمًا شَأْنُهُ
wāliduhu yudʿá Ḥakīman sha'nuhu
whose father was known as Hakim (Wise), and had sublime standing.
قَدِ اعْتَلَى أَعْزِزْ بِذَلِكَ شَانَا
qad iʿtalā aʿzizٌ bidhālika shānā
How elevated a rank!
وَاحْفَظْ أُصُولَ الْمُصْطَفَى حَتَّى تَرَى
wa-iḥfaẓ uṣūla l-muṣṭafá ḥattá tarā
Memorize the lineage of the Chosen One
فِي سِلْسِلَاتِ أُصُولِهِ عَدْنَانَا
fī silsilati uṣūlihi ʿAdnānā
until you reach Adnan in the line.
فَهُنَاكَ قِفْ وَاعْلَمْ بِرَفْعِهِ إِلَى اسْــ
fahunāka qif wa-iʿlam birfaʿihi ilá (Is)
Then stop. Know that it goes back to Prophet Ismail
ــمَاعِيلَ كَانَ لِلْأَبِ مِعْوَانَا
(I)smāʿīlan kāna lil-abī miʿwānā
who was a devoted helper to his father.
وَحِينَمَا حَمَلَتْ بِهِ آمِنَةٌ
wa-ḥīnama ḥamalathu ʾAminatun
When Amina was pregnant with him
لَمْ تَشْكُ شَيْئًا يَأْخُذُ النِّسْوَانَا
lam tashku shay'an ya'khudhun-niswānā
she never suffered any pain that befalls women
وَبِهَا أَحَاطَ اللُّطْفُ مِنْ رَبِّ السَّمَا
wa-bahā ʾaḥāṭa l-luṭfu min rabbis-samā'
The gentleness of the Lord of the heavens encompassed her.
أَقْصَى الْأَذَى وَالْهَمَّ وَالْأَحْزَانَا
aqṣá l-adhā wa-l-hamma wa-l-aḥzānā
He distanced all harm, worries and sorrow from her.
وَرَأَتْ كَمَا قَدْ جَاءَ مَا عَلِمَتْ بِهِ
wa-ra'at kamā qad jā'a mā ʿalimat bihi
She saw visions, as has been reported, by which she knew
أَنَّ الْمُهَيْمِنَ شَرَّفَ الْأَكْوَانَا
anna l-muhaymina sharrafa l-akwānā
that Allah the Guardian had honored the universe
بِالطُّهْرِ مَنْ فِي بَطْنِهَا فَاسْتَبْشَرَتْ
bi-ṭ-tuhri man fī baṭnihā fastabsharat
with the Pure One in her womb. So she rejoiced.
وَدَنَا الْمَخَاضُ فَأُتْرِعَتْ رِضْوَانَا
wa-danā l-maḥāḍu fa-utriʿat riḍānā
The time for birth drew near, and she was filled with good-pleasure*
سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
subḥāna llāhi wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāhi wa-lā ilāha illá llāhu wa-llāhu akbar
four times. Then add:
وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ فِي كُلِّ لَحْظَةٍ أَبَداً عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ وَرِضَى نَفسِهِ وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ
wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi l-ʿaliyyi l-ʿaẓīmi fī kulli laḥẓatin abadan ʿadada khalqihi wa-riḍā nafsihi wa-zinata ʿarshihi wa-midāda kalimātihi
Lights manifested from every direction.
وَتَجَلَّتِ الْأَنْوَارُ مِنْ كُلِّ الْجِهَـــا
wa-taja l-la n-nuwāru min kulli l-jihā(ti)
The time of the birth of the Accepted Intercessor had come.
ـــتِ فَوَقْتُ مِيلَادِ الْمُشَفَّعِ حَانَا
(ti) fawaqtu milādi l-mushaffiʿ ḥānā
وَقُبَيلَ فَجرٍ أَبرَزَت شَمسَ الْهُدَى
wa-qabīla fajrin abrazat shamsa l-hudá
Just before dawn, she gave birth to the Sun of Guidance.
ظَهَرَ الْحَبِيبُ مُكَرَّمًا وَمُصَانَا
ẓahara l-ḥabību mukarraman wa-muṣānā maḥallu l-maqāmi
The Beloved, honored and protected, appeared.
Chapter 7
مَحَلُّ الْمَقَام
Place of Standing
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدْ
ṣallá llāhu ʿalá muḥammad
O Allāh, send Your Mercy upon Muḥammad
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ (ثَلَاثًا)
ṣallá llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam (thalāthan)
O Allāh, send your Mercy and Peace upon him
يَا نَبِي سَلَامْ عَلَيْكَ
yā nabī salam ʿalayka
O Prophet, peace be upon you!
يَا رَسُول سَلَامْ عَلَيْكَ
yā rasūl salam ʿalayka
O Messenger, peace be upon you!
يَا حَبِيبْ سَلَامْ عَلَيْكَ
yā ḥabīb salam ʿalayka
O Beloved, peace be upon you!
صَلَوَاتُ اللَّه عَلَيْكَ
ṣalawātu llāhi ʿalayka
Allah's blessings be upon you!
أَبْرَزَ اللَّهُ الْمُشَفَّعْ
abrazat llāhu l-mushaffaʿ
Allah manifested the Accepted Intercessor,
صَاحِبَ الْقَدْرِ الْمُرَفَّعْ
sahib al-qadri l-murfaʿ
he of exalted stature.
فَمَلَا النُّورُ النَّوَاحِي
famālā n-nūru n-nawāḥī
The light filled all directions.
عَمَّ كُلَّ الْكَوْنِ أَجْمَعْ
ʿamma kulla l-kawni ajmaʿ
It spread through the entire cosmos.
نُكِّسَتْ أَصْنَامُ شِرْكٍ
nukkisat aṣnāmu shirk!
The idols of polytheism were overturned.
وَبِنَا الشِّرْكِ تَصَدَّعْ
wa-binā sh-shirki taṣaddaʿ
The edifice of idolatry sundered.
وَدَنَا وَقْتُ الْهِدَايَة
wa-danā waqtu l-hidāyah
The time for guidance drew near.
وَحِمَى الْكُفْرِ تَزَعْزَعْ
wa-ḥimā l-kufri tazāʿzaʿ
Disbelief's sanctuary convulsed.
مَرْحَبًا أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا
marḥaban ahlan wa-sahlan
Welcome! Welcome
بِكَ يَا ذَا الْقَدْرِ الْأَرْفَعْ
bika yā ḏā l-qadri l-arfaʿ
to you of highest rank!
يَا إِمَامَ اهْلِ الرِّسَالَة
yā imāma ahli r-risālah
O Imam of the Messengers
مَنْ بِهِ الْآفَاتُ تُدْفَعْ
man bihi l-āfātu tudfaʿ
by whom afflictions are repelled!
أَنْتَ فِي الْحَشْرِ مَلَاذٌ
anta fī l-ḥashri malādhun
You are the refuge on the Resurrection.
لَكَ كُلُّ الْخَلْقِ تَفْزَعْ
laka kullu l-khalqi tafzaʿ
All of creation will seek your aid.
وَيُنَادُونَ تَرَى مَا
wa-yunādūna tarā mā
They will cry out to you, “Do you see
قَدْ دَهَى مِنْ هَوْلٍ أَفْظَعْ
qad dahā min hawlin afẓaʿ
the most distressing terror that has befallen us?”
مَرْحَبًا يَا نُورَ عَيْنِي (مَرْحَبًا)
marḥaban yā nūra ʿaynī (marḥaban)
Welcome, O Light of my Essence! (Welcome!)
مَرْحَبًا جَدَّ الْحُسَيْنِ (مَرْحَبًا)
marḥaban jadda l-ḥusayn (marḥaban)
Welcome, Grandfather of Husayn! (Welcome!)
فَلَهَا أَنْتَ فَتَسْجُدْ
fa-lahā anta fa-tasjud
You are the one to intercede, so you prostrate,
وَتُنَادَى اشْفَعْ تُشَفَّعْ
wa-tunādá ishfaʿ tushaffāʿ
and you are told, “Intercede, and your intercession will be accepted!”
فَعَلَيْكَ اللَّهُ صَلَّى
fa-ʿalayka llāhu ṣallá
So may Allah send blessings upon you
مَا بَدَا النُّورُ وَشَعْشَعْ
mā badā n-nūru wa-shaʿshaʿ
as long as light appears and spreads.
وَبِكَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنَ نَسْأَلْ
wa-bika r-raḥmānu nasʾal
By you, we ask the Most Compassionate,
وَإِلَهُ الْعَرْشِ يَسْمَعْ
wa-ilāhu l-ʿarshi yasmaʿ
and the Lord of the Throne answers:
رَبِّ فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي (يَا ٱللَّه)
rabbi fāghfir lī dhunūbī (yā llāh)
Lord, forgive me my sins (O Allah!)
بَرْكَةِ الهَادِي الْمُشَفَّعْ (يَا ٱللَّه)
barakati l-hādī l-mushaffiʿ (yā llāh)
by the blessing of the Guide and Accepted Intercessor, (O Allah!)
يَا عَظِيمَ الْمَنِّ يَا رَبّ
yā ʿaẓīma l-manni yā rabb
O Conferrer of the Immense Gift, O Lord,
شَمْلَنَا بِالْمُصْطَفَى اجْمَعْ
shamilnā bi-l-muṣṭafá ijmaʿ
unite us all with the Chosen One
وَبِهِ فَانْظُرْ إِلَيْنَا
wa-bihi fa-nẓur ilayna
By him, gaze at us
وَاعْطِنَا بِه كُلَّ مَطْمَعْ
wa-aʿṭinā bihi kulla maṭmaʿ
By him, grant us every desire
وَاكْفِنَا كُلَّ الْبَلَايَا
wa-kfinā kulla l-bala'yā
Protect us from all tribulations
وَادْفَعِ الْآفَاتِ وَارْفَعْ
wa-dfaʿi l-āfāti wa-irfaʿ
Repel and lift all afflictions
صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَى مُحَمَّدْ
ṣallá llāh ʿalá muḥammad
May Allah send blessings upon Muhammad
صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْه وَسَلَّمْ
ṣallá llāh ʿalayhi wa-sallam
May Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace
وَاسْقِنَا يَا رَبّ أَغِثْنَا
wa-asqinā yā rabb aghiṯnā
Give us a drink, O Lord! Grant us succor
بِحَيًا هَطَّالْ يَهْمَعْ
bi-ḥayyin haṭṭāl yahmaʿ
with a life-giving rain
وَاخْتِمِ الْعُمْرَ بِحُسْنَى
wa-ikhtimil-ʿumra bi-ḥusnā
Seal our lives with ultimate goodness
وَاحْسِنِ الْعُقْبَى وَمَرْجَعْ
wa-aḥsinil-ʿuqbā wa-marjaʿ
Make our outcome beautiful
وَصَلَاةُ اللَّهِ تَغْشَى
wa-ṣalātu llāhi taghshā
May the blessings of Allah cover
مَنْ لَهُ الْحُسْنُ تَجَمَّعْ
man lahū l-ḥusnu tajammaʿ
the one who all beauty is gathered in
أَحْمَدَ الطُّهْرَ وآلَه
Aḥmada Ṭ-ṭuhra wa-ālihi
Ahmad the Pure, and his family
وَالصَّحَابَه مَا السَّنَا شَعْ
wa-ṣ-ṣaḥābah mā s-sana shaʿ
and companions as long as light spreads
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 8
وُلِدَ الحَبِيْبُ فَخَرَّ حَالًا سَاجِدًا
wulida l-ḥabību fakharra ḥālan sājidًan
The Beloved was born and immediately fell into prostration
لِلَّهِ مَنْ أَنْشَانَا وَبَرَانَا
li-llāhi man anshanā wa-barānā
to Allah who created and made us.
وَرِعَايَةُ الْمَوْلَى تُحِيطُ بِأَحْمَدٍ
wa-riʿāyatu l-mawlá tuḥīṭu bi-Aḥmadin
The Lord's providence, hidden and manifest,
فِي كُلِّ حِينٍ بَاطِنًا وَعَيَانَا
fī kulli ḥinin bāṭinan wa-ʿayānā
encompassed Ahmad in every moment.
قَدْ أَرْضَعَتْهُ الْأُمُّ ثُمَّ ثُوَيْبَةٌ
qad arḍaʿathu l-ummu thumma Thuwaibatun
His mother nursed him, then Thuwayba
وَحَلِيمَةٌ مَنْ سُعْدُهَا قَدْ بَانَا
wa-ḥalīmatun man saʿduhā qad bānā
and Halima whose good fortune was evident.
قَدْ بَشَّرَتْ ثُوَيبَةٌ سَيِّدَهَا
qad bashsharat Thuwaibatun sayyidahā
Thuwayba gave the good news to her master,
أَبَا لَهَبٍ أَعْتَقَهَا فَرْحَانَا
abā Lahabin aʿtaqahā farḥānā
Abu Lahab, who freed her out of happiness.
لَمْ يَنْسَ خَالِقُنَا فَرْحَتَهُ
lam yansā khāliqunā farḥatahu
Our Creator did not forget Abu Lahab's happiness
بِالْمُصْطَفَى وَبِذَا الحَدِيثُ أَتَانَا
bi-l-muṣṭafá wa-bidha l-ḥadīthi atānā
at the birth of the Chosen One. A hadith has come to us
أَنَّ الْعَذَابَ مُخَفَّفٌ فِي كُلِّ إِثْـــ
anna l-ʿadhāba mukhaffafun fī kulli ithnayn
that his punishment is lightened on Mondays
ــنَيْنِ لِفَرْحَتِهِ بِمَنْ وَافَانَا
lifarḥatihī bi-man wāfanā
due to his happiness with the one who came to us.
هَذَا مَعَ الْكُفْرِ فَكَيْفَ بِفَرْحَةٍ
hādhā maʿa l-kufri fakayfa bi-farḥatin
Relief despite disbelief. So what then
مِنْ ذِي فُؤَادٍ امْتَلَا إِيمَانَا
min dhī fu'ādin imtalā imānā
for the joy of one who has a heart filled with faith?
وَرَأَتْ حَلِيمَةٌ مَا رَأَتْ مِنْ بَرَكَـــا
wa-ra'at Ḥalīmatun mā ra'at min barakati
Halima saw such wondrous blessings
ــتِ مُحَمَّدٍ مَا حَيَّرَ الْأَذْهَانَا
Muḥammadin mā ḥayyar l-adhhānā
of Muhammad, which bewilder the mind.
دَرَّ لَهُ الثَّدْيُ وَقَدْ كَانَ ابْنُهَا
darra lahu th-thadyu wa-qad kāna ibnuhā
The milk in her bosom now became abundant, when before, her own son
يَبِيتُ يَبْكِي مُسْغَبًا جَيعَانَا
yabit yubki musghaban jauʿānā
would spend the night crying out of hunger.
لَكِنَّهُ لَيْلَةَ أَنْ جَاءَ الحَبِيــ
lākinnahū laylatin an jā'a l-ḥabību
But the night that the Beloved came,
ــبُ بَاتَ مَوْفُورَ الرِّضَا شَبْعَانَا
bāta mawfūran r-riḍā shabʿānā
her son slept perfectly satisfied and sated.
وَدَرَّتِ النَّاقَةُ أَلْبَانًا وَقَدْ
wa-darrati n-nāqu al-bānān wa-qad
Her camel yielded abundant milk
سَمُنَتْ دُوَيْبَتُهَا فَكَانَ شَانَا
samanat Duwaybituhā fakāna shānā
and her emaciated riding animal fattened.
أَنْكَرَهُ رِفْقَتُهَا وَسَلَّمَتْ
ankarahū rifqatuhā wa-sallamat
Her companions were incredulous at what they saw.
أَشْجَارٌ أَحْجَارٌ عَلَى مَوْلَانَا
ashjārun aḥjārun ʿalá mawlānā
Trees and stones greeted our master.
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ أَنْطَقَ أَشْجَارًا وَأَحْــ
subḥāna man anṭaqa ashjāran wa-aḥ(jārًin
Glory be to the One who gave speech to trees
ــجَارًا تُحَيِّي الْمُصْطَفَى سُبْحَانَا
(wa-aḥ)jārًin tuḥyī l-muṣṭafá subḥānā
and stones to greet the Chosen One! Glory be to Him!
يَا رَبَّنَا صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمًا
yā rabbanā ṣalli wa-sallim dāʾiman
O our Lord, send blessings and grant peace constantly
عَلَى حَبِيبِكَ مَنْ إِلَيْكَ دَعَانَا
ʿalá ḥabībika man ilayka daʿānā
to Your Beloved who called us unto You
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 9
هَذَا وَقَدْ نَشَأَ الحَبِيبُ بِسِيرَةٍ
hādhā wa-qad nasha'a l-ḥabību bisīratin
The Beloved grew up with well-pleasing conduct
مَرْضِيَّةٍ وَمَا أَتَى عِصْيَانَا
marḍiyyatin wa-mā atāʿa ʿiṣyānā
and never went anywhere near sin.
تَرْعَاهُ عَيْنُ اللَّهِ مَنْ أَدَّبَهُ
taraʿāhu ʿaynu llāhi man addabahū
Allah's providence watched over the Prophet
أَحْسَنَ تَأْدِيبَ النَّبِي إِحْسَانَا
aḥsana ta'dība n-nabiyyi iḥsanā
and He perfected his character most beautifully.
فَنَشَا صَدُوقًا مُحْسِنًا ذَا عِفَّةٍ
fa-nashā ṣadūqan muḥsinan dhā ʿiffatin
So he grew up truthful, virtuous, chaste,
وَفُتُوَّةٍ وَأَمَانَةٍ مِعْوَانَا
wa-futuwwatin wa-amānataً miʿwānā
chivalrous, trustworthy and always helping others.
ذَا هِمَّةٍ وَشَجَاعَةٍ وَتَوَقُّرٍ
dhā himmatin wa-shajāʿatin wa-tawqīrin
And with aspiration, courage, dignified bearing,
وَمَكَارِمٍ لَا تَحْتَصِي حُسْبَانَا
wa-makārimin lā taḥtaṣī ḥusbanā
and noble qualities whose number is beyond count.
دُعِيَ الْأَمِينُ وَهُوَ فِي أَهْلِ السَّمَا
duʿiya l-amīnu wa-huwa fī ahl is-samā
He was called the Trustworthy. And among the inhabitants of the heavens
نِعْمَ الْأَمِينُ لَهُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ صَانَا
niʿma l-amīnu lahu l-muhayminu ṣānā
he was the best trustee. Allah the Guardian protected him.
ذَهَبَتْ بِهِ الْأُمُّ تَزُورُ أَبَاهُ فِي
dhahabat bihi l-ummu tazūru abāhu fī
His mother took him to Tayba to visit his father
طَيْبَةَ إِذْ فِيهَا الحِمَامُ كَانَا
Ṭaybah idh fīhā l-ḥimāmu kānā
who had passed away there
وَالْمُصْطَفَى فِي بَطْنِهَا وَقَدْ أَتَى
wa-l-muṣṭafá fī baṭnihā wa-qad atā
when the Chosen One was in her womb.
عَلَيْهِ سِتٌّ مِنْ سِنِيهِ الآنَا
ʿalayhi sittun mina sinīhi ālanā
And he was now six years of age.
وَقَدْ أَتَاهَا الْمَوْتُ حِينَ رُجُوعِهَا
wa-qad atāhā l-mawtu ḥīna rujūʿihā
She passed away on her return to Makka,
فَحَبَاهُ عَبْدُ الْمُطَّلِبِ حَنَانَا
fa-ḥabāhu ʿAbdu l-Muṭṭalibi ḥanānā
so Abdul Muttalib treated him with love.
سَنَتَيْنِ وَافَاهُ الحِمَامُ فَضَمَّهُ
sinatayni wafāhu l-ḥimāmu fa-ḍammāhu
Two years later, Abdul Muttalib passed away,
عَمٌّ مَلَا الْعَطْفُ عَلَيْهِ جَنَانَا
ʿammun malā l-ʿaṭfu ʿalayhi janānā
so [the Prophet's] uncle [Abu Talib] whose heart was filled with affection for him welcomed him.
خَطَبَتْهُ بِنْتُ خُوَيْلِدٍ فِي الخَمْسِ وَالْـ
khaṭabat-hu bintu Ḫuwailidin fī l-khamsi wal
Khadija, daughter of Khuwaylid, proposed to him when he was
ــعِشْرِينَ حَازَتْ بِالمُشَفَّعِ شَانَا
(wal)-ʿishrīna ḥāzat bil-mushaffiʿ shānā
twenty five. Through the Accepted Intercessor she received true rank.
قَدْ حَقَّقَ الْمَوْلَى لَهَا آمَالَهَا
qad ḥaqqaqa l-mawlá lahā āmālahā
The Lord had fulfilled her hopes.
نَالَتْ سَلَامًا عَالِيًا وَمَكَانَا
nālat salāman ʿāliyān wa-makānā
And she attained a lofty station and greetings of peace from Him.
وَحَلَّ مُشْكِلَةً لِوَضْعِ الْحَجَرِ الْــ
wa-ḥalla mushkilata li-waḍʿi l-ḥajari l(-aswadi)
The Prophet resolved the dispute over placing
أَسْوَدِ فِي الْكَعْبَةِ حَيْثُ أَبَانَا
l-aswadi fī l-kʿabati ḥaythu abanā
the Black Stone in the Ka'ba
عَنْ سِعَةِ الْعَقْلِ وَوَقَّادِ الحِجَا
ʿan siyātil-ʿaqli wa-waqqādi l-ḥijā
revealing his vast intellect and great sagacity.
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ عَلَّمَهُ وَأَعَانَا
subḥāna man ʿallamahū wa-aʿānā
Glory be to the One who taught and aided him!
يَا رَبَّنَا صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمًا
yā rabbanā ṣalli wa-sallim dāʾiman
O our Lord, send blessings and grant peace constantly
عَلَى حَبِيبِكَ مَنْ إِلَيْكَ دَعَانَا
ʿalá ḥabībika man ilayka daʿānā
to Your Beloved who called us unto You
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 10
وَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ بِوَحْيِ اللَّهِ فِي
wa-atāhu Jibrīlu bi-waḥyi llāhi fī
Jibril came to him with Allah's revelation in
غَارِ حِرَاءٍ يَعْبُدُ الرَّحْمَنَ
Ḥārā'ir Ḥirā'in yaʿbudu r-raḥmāna
Cave Hira where he was worshipping the Most Compassionate.
وَضَمَّهُ الثَّلَاثَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَهُ
wa-ḍammāhu th-thalātha thumma arsalahu
He embraced him thrice, then released him, saying:
اِقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ عَلَّمَ الإِنْسَانَا
iqraʾ wa-rab-buka ʿallama l-insāna
Read! Your Lord taught man.
فَدَعَا ثَلَاثًا فِي خَفَا فَأَتَاهُ أَنْ
fa-daʿā thalāthan fī khafā fa-atāhu an
He invited to Islam in secrecy for three years. Then the command came to him:
اِصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤمَرْ بِهِ إِعْلَانَا
iṣdaʿ bimā tuʾmaru bihi iʿlānan
Proclaim openly what you have been commanded.
كَثُرَ الْأَذَى وَهُوَ الصَّبُورُ لِرَبِّهِ
kathura l-adhā wa-huwa ṣ-ṣabūru li-rabbihi
Harm done to him increased, while he remained very patient
وَهُوَ الشَّكُورُ وَكانَ لَا يَتَوَانَى
wa-huwa sh-shakūru wa-kāna lā yatawānā
and very grateful to his Lord, and he never let up.
مَاتَتْ خَدِيجَةُ وَأَبُو طَالِبٍ فِي الْــ
māṭat Ḫadījatun wa-Abu Ṭālibin fī-l
Khadija and Abu Talib passed away when he was fifty,
ــخَمْسِينَ فَاشْتَدَّ الأَذَاءُ فُنُونَا
(fī)-l khamsīn fa-ishtadda l-adhā f-unnunā
and harm of all kinds done to him intensified.
وَأَتَى ثَقِيفًا دَاعِيًا فَرَمَوْهُ بِالْــ
wa-atā Thaqīfan dāʿiyan fa-ramaw-hu bi-
He went to Thaqif to call them to Allah.
أَحْجَارِ بَلْ أَغْرَوْا بِهِ الصِّبْيَانَا
aḥjāri balm aghraw bihi ṣ-ṣibyānā
They pelted him with stones. They even urged their children to do so.
مَلَكُ الجِبَالِ أَتَى فَقَالَ اطْبِقُهَا
malaku l-jibāli atā fa-qāla itbiq-hā
The angel of the mountains came to him and said, “Should I make the mountains fall on them?”
فَقَالَ لَا، بَلْ أَرْتَجِي العُقْبَانَا
fa-qāla lā bal artaji l-ʿuqbānā
He replied: No, I have hope in their offspring.
أَسْرَى بِهِ الْمَوْلَى وَصَلَّى خَلْفَهُ الرُّ
asrā bihi l-mawlá wa-ṣallá khalfahu r-
The Lord took him on a journey by night. All the Messengers prayed behind him,
سْلُ وَشَاهَدَ بَرْزَخًا وَجِنَانَا
silū wa-shāhada barzakhًan wa-jinānā
and he witnessed the intermediate world and the Gardens.
عَرَجَ الْحَبِيبُ إِلَى السَّمَوَاتِ الْعُلَى
ʿaraja l-ḥabību ilá s-samāwāti l-ʿulā
The Beloved ascended to the highest heavens, the Throne and the Footstool.
وَالْعَرْشِ وَالْكُرْسِي رَأَى مَوْلَانَا
wa-l-ʿarshi wa-l-kursī ra'á mawlānā
And he saw our Lord.
وَالْإِذْنُ بِالْهِجْرَةِ جَاءَ لِيَثْرِبٍ
wa-l-idhn bi-l-hijrati jā'a li-Tharibin
Permission came to migrate to Yathrib,
فَبِهِ ازْدَهَى الْبَلَدُ الْكَرِيمُ وَزَانَا
fa-bihi izdahā l-baladu l-karīmu wa-zānā
and by him the noble land was beautified and it flourished.
فَأَقَامَ عَشْرًا دَاعِيًا وَمُجَاهِدًا
fa-aqāma ʿashara dāʿiyan wa-mujāhidan
He resided there for ten years, calling to Allah and striving,
وَصَحَابُهُ كَانُوا لَهُ أَعْوَانَا
wa-ṣ-ṣaḥābu-hu kānū lahū aʿwānā
and his companions were helpers to him.
لَا يَرْفَعُونَ إِذَا أَتَى أَصْوَاتَهُمْ
lā yarfaʿūna idhā atā aṣwātuhum
They would never raise their voices in his presence
بَلْ لَا يُحِدُّونَ البَصَر إِمْعَانَا
bal lā yuḥiddūna l-baṣara imʿānā
nor even stare at him closely
قَدْرًا وَتَعْظِيمًا لِشَأْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ
qadrًan wa-taʿẓīman li-shāni muḥammadin
out of esteem and reverence for the rank of Muhammad
إِذْ قَدْ تَلَوْا فِي فَضْلِهِ قُرْآنَا
idh qad talaw fī faḍlihi qur'ānā
for they had certainly recited verses of the Quran about his excellence
وَلَقَدْ رَأَوْا مِنْ خُلُقِهِ عَجَبًا وَكَمْ
wa-laqad ra'aw min khuluqihi ʿajaban wa-kam
They saw wonders in his character.
قَدْ شَاهَدُوا مَا حَيَّرَ الأَذْهَانَا
qad shāhadū mā ḥayyar al-adhhānā
How much of what they witnessed of him bewilders the mind!
كَرَمًا وَعَفْوًا وَالسَّخَا وَتَوَاضُعًا
karaman wa-ʿafwan wa-sakhāʾ wa-tawāḍuʿan
Nobility, pardon, generosity and humbleness.
وَاْلجِذْعَ حَنَّ مَحَبَّةً وَحَنَانَا
wa-l-jiḏʿa ḥanna maḥabbatan wa-ḥanānā
The tree-trunk moaned out of love and affection for him.
وَالْمَاءَ مِنْ بَيْنِ الْأَصَابِعِ نَابِعًا
wa-l-māʾa min bayni l-aṣābiʿi nābiʿan
Water flowed from between his fingers,
وَالْجَيْشَ أَضْحَى شَارِبًا رَيَّانَا
wa-l-jayshu aḍḥā shariban rayyānā
and the entire army drank from it and was quenched.
وَاللَّهِ قَدْ عَظُمَتْ مَعَاجِزُ أَحْمَدٍ
wa-llāhi qad ʿaẓumat maʿājizu Aḥmadin
I swear by Allah, the miracles of Ahmad are immense.
رَفَعَ الْمُهَيْمِنُ لِلنَّبِيِّ مَكَانَا
rafaʿa l-muhayminu li-nnabiyy mākānā
Allah the Guardian elevated the rank of the Prophet.
وَلَقَدْ غَزَا سَبْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ مَعَ الصَّــ
wa-laqad ghazā sabʿatan wa-ʿishrīna maʿa l-ṣa
He fought twenty seven battles along with his companions,
ــحْبِ رِجَالًا قَدْ مَشَوْا رُكْبَانَا
(l-ṣa)ḥbi rijālan qad mashaw rukbanā
on foot or riding.
أَكْرِمْ بِهِ وَبِصَحْبِهِ وَبِتَابِعٍ
akrim bihī wa-bi-ṣaḥbihi wa-bi-tābin
How noble is he, and his companions and their successors!
يَا رَبِّ أَلْحِقْنَا بِهِمْ إِحْسَانَا
yā rabbi alḥiqnā bihim iḥsanā
O Lord, join us with them, out of Your generosity!
يَا رَبَّنَا صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمًا
yā rabbanā ṣalli wa-sallim dāʾiman
O our Lord, send blessings and grant peace constantly
عَلَى حَبِيبِكَ مَنْ إِلَيْكَ دَعَانَا
ʿalá ḥabībika man ilayka daʿānā
to Your Beloved who called us unto You
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهْ
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi waʿalá ālihi
Oh Allāh, send Your mercy, peace and blessings upon him and his Family
Chapter 11
الدُّعَاءُ
duʿāʾu
Supplication
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Ever-Merciful
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
al-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
ٱللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ فِي الْأَوَّلِين
allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalá sayyidinā muḥammadin fī l-awwalīn
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad among the first.
وَصَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ فِي الْآخِرِين
wa-ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalá sayyidinā muḥammadin fī l-ākhirīn
And send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad among the last.
وَصَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ فِي النَّبِيِّين
wa-ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalá sayyidinā muḥammadin fī n-nabiyyīn
And send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad among the prophets
وَصَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ علَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ فِي الْمُرْسَلِين
wa-ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalá sayyidinā muḥammadin fī l-mursalin
And send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad among the messengers.
وَصَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ فِي الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَى إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّين
wa-ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalá sayyidinā muḥammadin fī l-mala'i l-aʿlá ilá yawm id-dīn
And send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad among the highest assembly until the Day of Judgment.
وَصَلِّ وَسَلِّم عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِين
wa-ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalá sayyidinā muḥammadin wa-ʿalá ālihi wa-ṣaḥbihi ajmaʿīn
And send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad and his family and all his companions
وَلَقَدْ أَشَرْتُ لِنَعْتِ مَنْ أَوْصَافُهُ
wa-laqad ashartu linaʿti man awṣāfuhu
I have touched on the description of the one whose qualities
تُحِيِي الْقُلُوبَ تُهَيِّجُ الْأَشْجَانَا
tuḥyī l-qulūba tuhajjiju l-ashjānā
give life to hearts and kindle love.
وَاللَّهُ قَدْ أَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ فَمَا يُسَــا
wa-llāhu qad athnā ʿalayhi famā yusāwa
Allah Himself has praised him.
وِي الْقَوْلُ مِنَّا أَوْ يَكُونُ ثَنَانَا
wa-īnna minnā qawlun amyakūnu thanānā
Could our statements of praise ever measure up to His?
لَكِنَّ حُبًّا فِي السَّرَائِرِ قَدْ دَعَا
lākinnahu ḥubban fī s-sarā'ir qadd daʿā
Nonetheless, it is love in our inmost beings that has driven us
لِمَدِيحِ صَفْوَةِ رَبِّنَا وَحَدَانَا
li-madhīḥi ṣafwati rabbinā wa-ḥadānā
to praise the choicest one of our Lord.
وَإِذِ امْتَزَجْنَا بِالْمَوَدَّةِ هَهُنَا
wa-idh imtazajnā bil-mawaddati hahnā
Infused with love,
نَرْفَعُ أَيْدِي فَقْرِنَا وَرَجَانَا
narfaʿu aydī faqirnā wa-rajānā
we raise our hands of poverty and hope
لِلْوَاحِدِ الْأَحَدِ الْعَلِيِّ إِلَهِنَا
li-l-wāḥidi l-aḥadi l-ʿaliyyi ilāhinā
to the One and Only, the Most High, our God,
مُتَوَسِّلِينَ بِمَنْ إِلَيْهِ دَعَانَا
mutawassilīna biman ilayhi daʿānā
while seeking a means of approach to Him through the one who called us unto Him,
مُخْتَارِهِ وَحَبِيبِهِ وَصَفِيِّهِ
mukhtārihi wa-ḥabībihi wa-ṣafiyyihi
His Chosen One, His Beloved, His Friend
زَيْنِ الْوُجُودِ بِهِ الإِلَهُ حَبَانَا
zayni l-wujūdi bihi l-ilāhu ḥabānā
the Splendor of Existence, who God gifted us with.
يَا رَبَّنَا يَا رَبَّنَا يَا رَبَّنَا
yā rabbanā yā rabbanā yā rabbanā
O our Lord, O our Lord, O our Lord,
بِالْمُصْطَفَى اقْبَلْنَا أَجِبْ دَعْوَانَا
bil-muṣṭafá iqbalnā ajib daʿwānā
by the Chosen One, accept us and answer our prayers!
أَنْتَ لَنَا أَنْتَ لَنَا يَا ذُخْرَنَا
anta lanā anta lanā yā dukhranā
You are sufficient for us. You are sufficient for us, O our Treasure,
فِيْ هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي أُخْرَانَا
fī hadhihi d-dunyā wa-fī ukhrá nā
in this life and in our hereafter!
أَصْلِحْ لَنَا الْأَحْوَالَ وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبَنَا
aṣliḥ lanā l-aḥwāla wa-ghfir dhanbanā
Set aright our states, forgive our sins,
وَلَا تُؤَاخِذْ رَبِّ إِنْ أَخْطَانَا
wa-lā tu'ākhidh rabbi in akhṭānā
and Lord, do not take us to task if we make mistakes.
وَاسْلُكْ بِنَا فِي نَهْجِ طَهَ الْمُصْطَفَى
wa-sluk binā fī nahji Ṭaha l-muṣṭafā
Set us on the path of Taha, the Chosen One.
ثَبِّتْ عَلَى قَدَمِ الْحَبِيبِ خُطَانَا
thabbit ʿalá qadami l-ḥabīb khuṭānā
Make our footsteps firmly follow those of the Beloved's.
أَرِنَا بِفَضْلٍ مِنْكَ طَلْعَةَ أَحْمَدٍ
arnā bi-faḍlin minka ṭalʿata Aḥmadin
Out of Your grace, show us Ahmad in all his splendor
فِي بَهْجَةٍ عَيْنُ الرِّضَا تَرْعَانَا
fī bahjati ʿayni r-riḍā tarʿānā
Watch over us with Your good-pleasure
وَارْبُطْ بِهِ فِي كُلِّ حَالٍ حَبْلَنَا
wa-arbuṭ bihi fī kulli ḥālin ḥablanā
Connect us to him in every state
وَحِبَالَ مَنْ وَدَّ وَمَنْ وَالَانَا
wa-ḥibāla man wadda wa-man wālanā
and likewise connect to him those who love us and those loyal to us
وَالْمُحْسِنِينَ وَمَنْ أَجَابَ نِدَائَنَا
wa-l-muḥsinīna wa-man ajāba n-nidānā
and those who do good, and those who respond to our call,
وَذَوِي الْحُقُوقِ وَطَالِبًا أَوْصَانَا
wa-dhawi l-ḥuqūqi wa-ṭāliban awṣānā
and those who have rights over us, and those who have asked us to pray for them
وَالْحَاضِرِينَ وَسَاعِيًا فِي جَمْعِنَا
wa-l-ḥāḍirīna wa-sāʿiyan fī jamʿinā
and those present in the gathering, and those who strive to gather us.
هَا نَحْنُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ أَنْتَ تَرَانَا
hā naḥnu bayna yadayka anta tarānā
Here we are before You! You see us!
وَلَقَدْ رَجَوْنَاكَ فَحَقِّقْ سُؤْلَنَا
wa-laqad rajawnāka fa-ḥaqqiq suʾlanā
We have placed our hopes in You, so fulfil our request
وَاسْمَعْ بِفَضْلِكَ يَا سَمِيعُ دُعَانَا
wa-smʿa bi-faḍlika yā samīʿu duʿānā
Hear our prayer, out of Your grace, O All-Hearing!
وَانْصُرْ بِنَا سُنَّةَ طَهَ فِي بِقَــا
wa-nṣur binā sunnata Ṭaha fī biqā
Grant victory to the sunna of Taha through us
ــعِ الْأَرْضِ وَاقْمَعْ كُلَّ مَنْ عَادَانَا
ʿi l-arḍi wa-qmaʿ kulla man ʿādānā
throughout the earth, and restrain all who oppose us
وَانْظُرْ إِلَيْنَا وَاسْقِنَا كَأْسَ الْهَنَا
wa-nẓur ilaynā wa-sqinā kaʾsa l-hanā
Gaze at us. Give us a drink from the cup of bliss.
وَاشْفِ وَعَافِ عَاجِلًا مَرْضَانَا
wa-shfi wa-ʿāfi ʿājilan marḍānā
Swiftly heal and grant well-being to our sick.
وَاقْضِ لَنَا الْحَاجَاتِ وَاحْسِنْ خَتْمَنَا
wa-qḍi lanā l-ḥājāti wa-aḥsin khatmanā
Fulfil our needs. Beautify our ending
عِنْدَ الْمَمَاتِ وَأَصْلِحَنْ عُقْبَانَا
ʿinda l-mamāti wa-aṣliḥan ʿuqbānā
when we die, and set aright our outcome!
يَا رَبِّ وَاجْمَعْنَا وَأَحْبَابًا لَنَا
yā rabbi wa-jmaʿnā wa-aḥbāban lanā
O Lord, O our Hope, unite us and our loved ones
فِي دَارِكَ الْفِرْدَوْسِ يَا رَجْوَانَا
fī dārika l-firdawsi yā rajwānā
in the abode of Firdaws
بِالْمُصْطَفَى صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ
bi-l-muṣṭafá ṣalli ʿalayhi wa-ālihi
with the Chosen One! Send blessings upon him and his family
مَا حَرَّكَتْ رِيحُ الصَّبَا أَغْصَانَا
mā ḥarrakat rīḥu ṣ-ṣabā aghṣānā
as long as the east wind stirs branches.
﴿ سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ وَسَلَٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴾
subḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizzati ʿammā yaṣifūn wa-salāmun ʿalá l-mursalīn wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
37:180 Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! He is free from what they attribute to Him. 37:181 And peace be upon the messengers. 37:182 And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
